Yet, somewhere along the way, that bridge was barricaded.</p><p></p><p>Today the unfortunate reality is that, we often see science wielded not as a shared tool for exploration, but as a weapon&#8212;used to discredit, marginalise, or outright silence voices outside a narrow, institutionally approved circle. This has hit the field of alternative and functional medicine especially hard, creating a narrative that &#8220;real science&#8221; belongs only to those with certain degrees, affiliations, and uniforms.</p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>Science: A Historical Lens</strong></p><p>The very word science comes from the Latin scientia, meaning &#8220;knowledge.&#8221; For centuries, science was simply the disciplined pursuit of truth&#8212;whether you were an astronomer charting the stars, an herbalist cataloguing medicinal plants, or a mathematician calculating planetary orbits.</p><p></p><p>Before the 19th century, &#8220;scientists&#8221; as a formal profession didn&#8217;t exist. The term natural philosopher covered anyone who observed, tested, and reasoned about the world. Galileo, Newton, Darwin&#8212;all challenged prevailing orthodoxies not by owning science, but by practicing it.</p><p></p><p>It wasn&#8217;t the white coat that made them scientists.
